You can buy life insurance directly from a company's website. Plenty of people do. So why would you work with an independent agent instead?
I'm obviously biased here since I am one. But let me give you the practical reasons, and you can decide for yourself.
A Captive Agent Works for One Company
When you go to State Farm, or New York Life, or any single insurance company, the agent there can only sell you their products. They might have a good option. But they literally cannot show you anything else, even if another carrier has a better rate or a better policy for your situation.
It's like going to a Ford dealership and asking which car is best for you. They're going to tell you a Ford. Every time.
An Independent Agent Works for You
As an independent agent, I'm not tied to any one carrier. I work with over 50 life insurance providers, which means I can compare rates and policy features across the entire market and show you the options that actually fit your situation.
If Carrier A has the best rate for a healthy 35-year-old, I'll tell you. If Carrier B is better for someone with diabetes, I'll steer you there instead. I'm not pushing any one company's products because I don't work for any one company. I work for you.
The Price Is the Same (or Better)
Here's something most people don't realize: working with an independent agent doesn't cost you extra. The premiums are the same whether you buy direct or through me. The carrier pays my commission, not you.
And in many cases, I can actually find you a lower rate than you'd get going direct, because I'm comparing across 50+ carriers instead of looking at just one.
You Get a Real Person Who Knows Your Situation
When you buy online direct, you're on your own. You pick a policy, fill out the application, and hope you chose the right thing. If something doesn't make sense, you're calling an 800 number and talking to whoever picks up.
When you work with me, I know your name, your family situation, your budget, and your goals. I can tell you which riders are worth adding, which ones are a waste of money, and how to structure your coverage so you're not overpaying.
And if you ever need to file a claim or make a change, you call me directly. Same person, every time.
The Bottom Line
Going direct is fine if you know exactly what you want and you're confident you're getting the best rate. But most people don't know that. And the cost of getting it wrong — whether that's overpaying for years or being underinsured when it matters — is real.
An independent agent gives you the full picture so you can make the best decision. That's all I'm offering.
